The Zipporah Parks Hammond Endowed scholarship
JULY 2021
The Zipporah Parks Hammond Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2012 to honor Zipporah who graduated from the University of Colorado College of Nursing in 1946. A life-long Coloradan, she was the first black woman to graduate from the college despite the segregation and racism she routinely faced. She subtly and gracefully broke down barriers. She elevated the status of women, not just black women, by refusing to be held back by societal and institutional roadblocks which existed that made attaining her goal so difficult. Zipporah changed the perspective of many faculty and students as to the skills, abilities and passion of minorities who choose to pursue nursing as a career.
The obstacles Zipporah faced in the early 1940’s as the first black CU nursing student were many. She positively impacted many people over the course of her life and opened doors for those that have followed behind her. Nursing students today face different difficult challenges, but they are challenges nevertheless. This scholarship has been established with the intent of 1) making a positive difference in the life of a deserving nursing student of the college by helping to overcome financial challenges as she or he pursues their nursing degree, and 2) recognizing volunteer or public service rendered to those in need. It is with this in mind that deserving students who receive the Zipporah Parks Hammond Scholarship will positively represent the college, the nursing profession and will do good things to help and assist others in our society no matter what their circumstances.
In a recent CU alumni magazine article by K. Tippins Sylvestre, Steve was quoted saying "Zipporah lived her life in a way that exemplifies the empathy and passion that nurses and medical professionals bring to their work today. She also believed in volunteerism and philanthropy. She helped train medical interns and contributed her time and financial resources to organizations and causes intended to improve the human condition, .... The CU College of Nursing is preparing women and men to serve society and provide medical care for those in need."
My brother Darrell and I support the CU College of Nursing for several reasons. Zipporah broke an important barrier at the college as a student and a graduate that we believe is worthy of attention and remembrance. We established the Zipporah Parks Hammond Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment Fund to honor her memory, highlight her accomplishments, and help students who have followed Zipporah in to the nursing profession.
